Elderly Iowa Congressman’s Attacker Was Ex-Con Family Friend

Last week, a young man armed with a BB gun broke into Iowa Rep. Leonard Boswell’s home and attacked him and his family. He held the Congressman’s daughter Cindy at gunpoint, until Boswell’s grandson grabbed a shotgun and drove him off. The FBI arrested the alleged assailant, David Dewberry, on Tuesday.

Dewberry, 20, had spent time at the family’s home when he was younger, the Des Moines Registerreports, because his mother was a close friend of Rep. Boswell’s wife, Dody. In a statement released after Dewberry was arrested, Dody did not harshly condemn Dewberry. “I was disappointed to learn that the alleged intruder at my family’s farmhouse was David,” she said in the statement. “David and his mother were one of the many families that I befriended in our tight-knit school district and community.”

This is not the first time Dewberry has gotten in trouble with the law. In 2009, he paid a fine for possessing tobacco and an open alcohol container while underage. The next year, he was sentenced to two years of probation in Nebraska after breaking into two restaurants and stealing alcohol and and cash.
